Detection of Coherent Airstreams Using Cluster Analysis : Application to an Extratropical Cyclone

چکیده

Flow in geophysical fluids is commonly summarized by coherent streams (e.g., conveyor belt flows in extratropical cyclones or jet streaks in the upper troposphere). Typically, parcel trajectories are calculated from the flow field and subjective thresholds are used to distinguish coherent streams of interest. This methodology contribution develops a more objective approach to distinguish coherent airstreams within extratropical cyclones. Agglomerative clustering is applied to trajectories along with a method to identify the optimal number of cluster classes. Themethodology is applied to trajectories associatedwith the low-level jets of a well-studied extratropical cyclone. For computational efficiency, a constraint that trajectories must pass through these jet regions is applied prior to clustering; the partitioning into different airstreams is then performed by the agglomerative clustering. It is demonstrated that the methodology can identify the salient flow structures of cyclones: the warm and cold conveyor belts. A test focusing on the airstreams terminating at the tip of the bent-back front further demonstrates the success of themethod in that it can distinguish finescale flow structure such as descending sting-jet airstreams.

Probabilistic Clustering of Extratropical Cyclones Using Regression Mixture Models

A probabilistic clustering technique is developed for classification of wintertime extratropical cyclone (ETC) tracks over the North Atlantic. We use a regression mixture model to describe the longitude-time and latitude–time propagation of the ETCs. A simple tracking algorithm is applied to 6-hourly mean sea-level pressure fields to obtain the tracks from either a general circulation model (GC...

Extratropical and Tropical Transition

Extratropical and tropical transition each represents an end of the tropical cyclone lifecycle. Extratropical transition, along with dissipation, represents the end of the tropical cyclone lifecycle. Conversely, tropical transition represents a unique beginning to the tropical cyclone life cycle. In this lecture, we aim to describe both, focusing primarily on the extratropical transition proces...

In this section, summaries of recent progress in observations, forecasting, and research of tropical cyclone formation and extratropical transition are provided. Furthermore, requirements that remain for advancements in these topics are identified. During the period since IWTC-V, there have been improvements in observational capability, new research results into important physical processes, an...

Rossby wave breaking, the upper level jet, and serial clustering of extratropical cyclones in western Europe

Winter 2013/14 was the stormiest on record for the UK and was characterized by recurrent clustering of extratropical cyclones. This clustering was associated with a strong, straight and persistent North Atlantic jet and was also associated with Rossby wave breaking (RWB) on both flanks, pinning the jet in place. The occurrence of RWB and cyclone clustering is further studied in 36 years of the ...
